Jaw Pain, Clicking or Locking

Jaw Pain, Clicking or Locking? Understanding TMJ Disorders 😬

Jaw Pain, Clicking or Locking? When Should You Be Concerned About TMJ Disorders?

Your jaw works throughout the day. You use it when eating, speaking, yawning and even smiling. So when it starts clicking, aching or feeling stiff, the discomfort can affect more than just your mouth.

Some jaw sounds are harmless, but persistent pain or difficulty moving your jaw deserves attention.

What Are TMJ and TMD?

The temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull. You have one joint on each side of your face, just in front of your ears.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of conditions affecting these joints and the muscles responsible for jaw movement.

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain around the jaw, ears or temples.
  • Jaw stiffness, particularly when waking up.
  • Pain when chewing or opening your mouth.
  • Clicking or popping that is painful.
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully.
  • A jaw that occasionally locks.

It is important to understand that a clicking or popping sound without pain is common and does not necessarily indicate a disorder requiring treatment.

What Might Be Contributing to the Discomfort?

TMD can have several possible causes involving the jaw joint, surrounding muscles or other factors. Clenching your teeth, grinding, stress-related muscle tension and certain joint conditions may contribute to symptoms.

However, jaw pain can also come from dental problems or other conditions. That is why it is important not to assume every jaw symptom is TMJ-related.

When Should You Seek an Assessment?

If your jaw pain keeps returning, affects your ability to chew, limits mouth movement or causes locking, arrange a professional assessment.

A dentist can review your symptoms, examine your teeth and jaw, and help determine whether the problem may be dental, muscular or joint-related. Depending on the findings, further evaluation or referral may be appropriate.

Many TMD symptoms improve with simple, conservative approaches. Treatment should be based on the individual diagnosis, and permanent changes to the teeth or bite should not be undertaken casually.
